Corin design spoke to the owner of Highworth Dental, Siobhan Owen, and asked her a few questions on the business and this is what she had to say.

I graduated from Dundee University in 1990. Since gaining my BDS I have worked in private general practice and been at Highworth Dental Care since 1994, becoming practice principal in 2004.

I am also managing director of First Lab Direct Ltd outsourcing to a manufacturer in Hong Kong which gave me a great chance to travel around the Far East and Europe. I have a particular interest in modern crown and bridge design, especially in relation to the new generation of aesthetic all porcelain restorative systems. This is a subject on which I have co-written a series of papers, published on Aesthetic Dentistry Today, Private Dentistry and Dentistry journals.

I am on the judging panel for the national Dentistry awards and in 2010 was awarded a fellowship of the International Academy of Dental Facial Aesthetics and plan to develop this side of the business further.

    • You don’t always have to be right, or have the last word.
  • What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in business?
    • To recruit in haste
  • What do you like most about your job?
    • The business side, measuring and analysing data and KPI’s to measure the performance of the business
  • What do you like least?
    • Not meeting people’s expectations.
  • Who is your business hero?:
    • I have 2: Karen Brady and Deborah Meaden
  • What piece of advice would you give to someone new to business?
    • Don’t try and do everything yourself, delegate and get a good manager.
  • What is your personal ambition for life?
    • Striking a work/life balance where the work allows me to spend quality time with my family.
